2017 Baseball Team makes Whitehall History
Future Zephyr baseball players have big cleats to fill… last year, the 2017 baseball team made Whitehall history by being the first baseball team to make it to the state final. Although they didn’t win gold, they came home with silver medals, the first team to do so. Nicknamed the “Cindarella team”, they became known as the team that never gave up, even when the odds were against them. Below are some articles about their amazing journey.
History of the Zephyr
How did Whitehall choose the “Zephyrs”? The Class of 1937 held a contest in which the prize for the winning entry was $5.00 (a lot of money in those days!). David Steckel submitted the winning name:
He told the following story at his 60th class reunion to our Superintendent at that time:
“There was a big and powerful locomotive that used to come into the old Hokey Station called a Zephyr. Since this represented power, Mr. Steckel believed that it would be a great name for the spirit of Whitehall.
In January 2007, the Whitehall High School Athletic Department began the process of securing its own athletic identity by creating a new logo. The goal was to create a connection between the school district and the historical importance of the Zephyr train.
